I had my surgery 5/23/14 and as of today 6/9/15 I am down 30.4 lbs.
If I could give any advice it would be to make sure you are prepared and ready, not only for the surgery but also for when you get home.
Everything was just as promised. The pick up at the airport, lab work, and on to the hospital. The hospital was small by US standards but still comfortable. I had my daughter and son in law with me so there was a lot of support. Some of the people that came by themselves didn't come back to the hotel until the night before we left. I'm not sure why but I think if you didn't have anyone waiting for you they just had you stay at the hospital. I would check on that.
I really had no pain, just a little discomfort that would subside when I would get up and walk.
A couple of tricks...I took a gasX strip before I went to bed the night before. I would shave your tummy, the tape was a big challenge for me. Take some Gatorade or flavor drops that will give you some electrolytes for the day of and day after surgery. Put a few beef or chicken bullions in your purse for the airport. We left the hotel headed to the airport at 7am and my flight didn't leave until 1:30. It was a long and miserable wait and without the hot water and bullion I would have been in trouble. We had some people that left the night before and stayed at a hotel close to the airport so they didn't have to mess with the boarder and go so early. I definitely would have done that had I known.
The staff was great and took good are of me. The nurse was only a phone call away.
As far as being safe, my kids went out every night and took in the culture of Tijuana. I went walking with them and saw some of the jazz fest that was going on. They ate at great restaurants including the one at the hospital. As long as you know where you are going and are aware of your surroundings, it was very safe.
